Ain't No Mountain High Enough

When we had to tell the extended family that we wouldn't make it to the family reunion up on the North Fork [of the Clearwater River] this year, we felt pretty bad. It was the week and weekend we'd be returning from Denver, and we were already committed.

When we knew we were heading home from Denver a day earlier than planned (through a monstrous Wyoming thunderstorm), we decided to make a day-trip out of it. And to make the most of that single day that we could.

Brandon and Cameron had already been there and spending time with their cousins, so we loaded up the 'Burban with food and the girls and crammed a few hours of fun in before heading back to town to watch the fireworks at our friends' house. It was great to see family again, and actually get to do things we hadn't done in ages: like riding the four-wheelers.

In the days before we arrived, the guys all went out for some target shooting, part of the tradition of going camping. Here's Brandon, and Cameron, as they shot off the guns:

We'd sent our four-wheelers with the rest of the family, so when we arrived, the ATV's were already there. We hopped onto the four-wheelers, and headed up a nearby trail..... where we found SNOW!! Here's Alys and Emma:
And me riding behind Darcie:
Emma loves riding four-wheelers at home, around the yard. I think she really enjoyed actually going somewhere, seeing new views, and going faster that our usual at-home speed. She's telling Todd all about it:
We also found places were the road/trail was partially washed out. And a place where it was completely washed out:
Back at camp, I looked across the river and saw Cameron and two of my nephews..... on the other side! It looks like they're on a rock that sticks out from a sheer cliff wall, and like there is NO way they could have gotten to this point. Cameron assures me there was a good trail there, but I'm still skeptical. The river was still running high and fast.
Maybe this picture will give you a better idea of how far they were from me:
For my kids, camping means certain meals are expected. #1 on their list is Foil Dinners. So that was dinner that evening. It was not easy to fit them into the new fire rings that were installed at the campsites. The old rings worked better.
It was a great day -- full of family and fun. And we still made it back to town in time to see the big fireworks show. Best of both worlds.
