For this blog, I try not to go on photo overload with just one kid. But I really had a hard time deciding which photos to share for this. (Believe me, I've got way more than this saved on the hard drive. And that's even after culling the useless ones!) So please bear with me as I share more than a few photos from Darcie's Distinguished Young Women (a.k.a. Junior Miss) experience last month ...
There were 21 girls competing -- it made for a long night! This is her on performance night:
Just as she did for Alyssa, Todd's sister, Kerry, flew here to be Darcie's backstage "mom". We sure love and appreciate Kerry! These photos from backstage are courtesy of Kerry:
(It's like they're related, or something!)
Unlike Alyssa's year, there were 6 LDS girls competing this year, all friends, and all happen to be former Seminary students of mine. I was rooting for so many girls!!
These are Darcie's roses we sent to her (with the tiger mascot)... they lasted and lasted -- like, about 10 days afterwards!
Alyssa and I dropped off drinks for Darcie and her best friend. I think they liked them!
Stop the presses!!
Darcie ACTUALLY wore lipstick that night!
(You have no idea what kind of a big deal this is!)
(Of course, it wasn't a bright color...... ha!)
A quiet moment of non-denominational prayer before the performance. I love that they did that!
For her talent, after considering a few different possibilities, Darcie decided to play her saxophone. She wanted to do something different than the other piano players, singers, and monologuers. (not really a word, I just now made it up!)
So, she played, "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. And she wore a period costume to go along with it:
(Not the best quality/focus, but I do love that shot of her that Kerry took from in the wings!!)
During dress rehearsal, she even took pity on her mom-with-the-camera, and looked right at me for my photo-op:
Part of dress rehearsal is to practice receiving awards and posing for the official photographer. Pretty sure our Darcie is WAY more animated than most of the girls were for this part. I love how her personality shines through and she can make dull moments amazing with just the look on her face:
That's her faking her own shock at "receiving" an award. This next shot is her "joy" at sharing the award with another girl:
And her composure during the question-and-answer portion:
She had her interview portion of the competition on the afternoon of the performance. "Business Professional" is how the girls are instructed to dress:
Sure hope her actual interview didn't include THIS look:
The whole group, just after the opening number, and including last year's court:
How she really looked during her question-and-answer. The sleeves on the dress are a whole story on their own, but I kind of like how they finally ended up. And can I say right now that I am just a lazy seamstress? Yes? Well, I am!
It was a good experience for Darcie, and I'm glad she got to participate. She was not awarded any scholarship money, so the experience was all she came away with that night. But what an experience!
We're pretty darn proud of this girl anyway. She's pretty darn amazing!
